Arenal Volcano Hike: What to Expect, What to Pack, and When to Go

By Blackout CrewApr 25, 20267 min read

Hiking Arenal Volcano is the signature La Fortuna experience. Here's what to expect and how to do it right.

First, where you actually hike. You can't summit Arenal — it's an active volcano — but the trails in Arenal Volcano National Park get you remarkably close. The highlight is the 1968 lava-flow trail, which winds across hardened lava from the volcano's most famous eruption, with the cone looming above and the rainforest pressing in around you.

How hard is it? Most trails are moderate: a few hours of walking with some uneven, rocky lava sections. You don't need to be an athlete, but closed-toe shoes with good grip make a real difference on the lava rock.

Timing matters. Mornings give you the best odds of a clear view before clouds gather around the summit in the afternoon. Costa Rica's drier season, roughly December to April, means more reliable views, but the rainforest is greener and stunning in the wetter months too.

What to pack: water, sunscreen, a rain jacket (this is the rainforest — it can shower any time), bug spray, a hat, and your camera. Sturdy shoes over sandals, always.

Keep your eyes open for wildlife. Howler monkeys, coatis, toucans, and if you're lucky a sloth all live in the park. A guide dramatically increases what you'll spot — they know the trees and recognize the calls.

Day hike or night hike? Day hikes are about the lava fields and panoramic volcano views. Night hikes trade the views for nocturnal wildlife and, on a clear night, a sky that opens up over the cone.

Want the easy version? We run a guided Arenal Volcano hike with hostel pickup and a local guide who grew up here — small groups, real knowledge, and none of the logistics to figure out yourself. Ask us at reception and we'll get you set up.
