How to Get to La Fortuna from San José: Every Option Compared

By Blackout CrewMay 15, 20267 min read

La Fortuna sits about three to four hours northwest of San José, and there are a few ways to make the trip. Here's the honest breakdown so you can pick what fits your budget and style.

Shared shuttle is our pick for most travelers. Tourist shuttles run daily from San José and the SJO airport straight to La Fortuna hostels and hotels. They are air-conditioned, take roughly four hours, cost around 50 to 60 dollars, and let you book a seat without the stress of driving. It is the sweet spot of price and convenience.

A private transfer is the most flexible option. Want to leave on your own schedule or travel as a group? A private transfer runs about 120 to 160 dollars for the whole vehicle, not per person, so it can actually be cheaper than shuttles for four or more people. Door to door, no transfers, and the fastest way to arrive.

The public bus is the cheapest route. The bus from San José's Terminal 7-10 to La Fortuna costs only a few dollars and takes around four and a half hours, sometimes with a change in Ciudad Quesada (San Carlos). It is the budget choice and a more local experience, but slower and less forgiving with luggage.

Renting a car gives you total freedom to explore Arenal, Río Celeste, and the hot springs on your own time. The drive is paved and straightforward. Just factor in insurance costs and the fact that parking and navigation add a little friction. It's a great option if you plan to roam well beyond La Fortuna.

Flying into Liberia (LIR) instead of San José? Good news: La Fortuna is closer from there, about two and a half to three hours by car or shuttle.

Our advice: if it's your first time and you just want to arrive relaxed, book a shared shuttle. Message us before you arrive and we'll point you to the most reliable operators and help line up your pickup to the hostel.
