Rafting 101: Catching Your First Rapid on the Río Balsa

By Blackout CrewMar 5, 20266 min read

La Fortuna is a beginner rafter's paradise. Class II–III rapids, warm water, and stunning jungle make learning feel less like a chore and more like vacation.

The Río Balsa near us has different sections suitable for different levels. Beginner-friendly stretches have manageable rapids, slower current zones, and guides who've taught hundreds of first-timers. You won't be swept away in a challenging rapid before you're ready.

What to expect: Day one is exhilarating. Your shoulders will feel like wet noodles from paddling, you might end up wet (embrace it), and you'll laugh way more than you'll feel nervous. This is completely normal. Day two, your paddle strokes are stronger. By day three, you're reading the water and understanding how to navigate rapids—and you understand why people travel thousands of miles to raft.

Lessons matter. Our guides break down technique, position you correctly in the boat, and most importantly, build your confidence in the water. Solo figure-it-out rafting is possible but risky. Good instruction accelerates everything and keeps you safe.

The water is refreshing year-round, which means you focus on technique, not survival. Helmets and life vests are non-negotiable—mostly for safety. Rashguards and water shoes are highly recommended.

Realistic expectations: You won't be running class V rapids after a lesson. You will, however, paddle through actual rapids and feel the river's power. That feeling of catching a rapid's momentum and riding it through white water? That's why people travel thousands of miles to learn rafting.

Go multiple times while you're here. Your second and third sessions are where the magic compounds and you actually understand river mechanics. By the end of a week, you'll consider yourself a rafter.
