Las Mejores Aguas Termales en La Fortuna (Gratis, Económicas y de Lujo)
The Arenal Volcano heats the groundwater around La Fortuna, which is why the town is ringed with hot springs. There's an option for every budget — here's how to choose.
The free option: the hot river
Locals soak for free in a natural hot river off the main road toward Tabacón (often called El Chollín). It's exactly what it sounds like — warm volcanic water running over rocks, no entrance, no frills. Access and parking change over time and it can get busy, so ask our front desk for the current situation and go respectful: pack out everything you bring and wear sandals, the rocks are slippery.
Best value: an evening soak
If you want proper pools without resort prices, the Arenal hot springs evening (from $20) is the sweet spot — warm pools after dark, which is honestly the best time to soak anyway. It's the single best-value way to end an adventure day.
Roll it into a combo
Hot springs pair perfectly with a daytime activity. The hanging bridges and hot springs combo (from $75) gives you rainforest by day and a soak by night, and the waterfall, volcano & hot springs combo (from $120) bundles the three headliners.
The splurge
La Fortuna also has famous luxury thermal resorts (Tabacón and others) with landscaped pools, swim-up bars, and day passes that run well over $100. Worth it for a special night — but you don't need them to enjoy the volcano's water.
Quick tips
Go in the evening, bring water (it's dehydrating), wear sandals you don't mind getting wet, and don't soak right after a big meal. Most of all, look up — on a clear night you're soaking under the volcano.
Stay close to it all
