What It's Really Like

Working at Blackout Hostel isn't a typical job. You're not just running operations—you're creating core memories for travelers from around the world. You're part of something bigger.

You'll work hard. Salsa Night means you're on your feet. Emergency repairs happen at 3 AM. Problem-solving is daily. But you'll also learn skills most jobs never teach, make friends you'll have for life, and experience a lifestyle most people only dream about.

The team here is international, diverse, and genuinely supportive. We celebrate birthdays, help each other through tough times, and create a culture where people actually care about each other—not just the work.

You'll have stories. Not just funny ones (though plenty of those). You'll have stories about personal growth, cultural exchange, adventure, and discovering who you are outside your hometown.

Most staff members stay 3-6 months. Some stay longer. Either way, this experience changes people. In the best way.

Basic Requirements

  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Valid passport or travel documents
  • Ability to work in Costa Rica legally

Common Questions

Do I need to speak Spanish?

Not required, but it's helpful and we'll support you learning. Most staff speaks English and Spanish.

Can I get a work visa?

Costa Rica has a PENSIONADO visa (retirement/passive income). We can discuss visa options during the interview process. It depends on your country of origin and situation.

What's the pay?

Full-time positions include accommodation and meals (equivalent to significant cost savings). Hourly rates vary by position and experience. Part-time and volunteer positions come with free stay, meals, and event access.

How long are contracts?

Flexible. Most staff members work 3-6 months. We can discuss shorter or longer arrangements based on your goals.

Is there accommodation for families?

We primarily host solo travelers and young groups. Family accommodations are limited. Contact us to discuss specific situations.

What if I've never worked in hospitality?

That's okay! We look for attitude and reliability over experience. We'll train you. What matters is your willingness to learn and commitment to guest experience.
