La Fortuna vs Monteverde: Which Should You Visit? (Or Both)

By Blackout CrewMay 24, 20266 min read

It's the classic northern–Costa Rica dilemma: La Fortuna or Monteverde? Good news — they're close, very different, and easy to combine. Here's how to choose.

La Fortuna in a nutshell

Adventure capital. You've got the perfect cone of Arenal Volcano, the La Fortuna Waterfall, natural hot springs, rafting, and a lively, social, walkable town. It's lower elevation, so it's warm. Nights out are easy to find. If your trip is about big-ticket adventure + soaking under a volcano, this is your base. (More in our things to do guide.)

Monteverde in a nutshell

Cloud forest. It sits high in the mountains, so it's cooler and misty, draped in moss and birdsong. The headline experiences are hanging bridges through the canopy, some of the country's best zip-lining, and wildlife (quetzals, sloths, hummingbirds). It's quieter and more nature-focused than La Fortuna.

Head to head

  • Scenery: La Fortuna = volcano + waterfalls; Monteverde = misty cloud forest.
  • Vibe: La Fortuna = social/lively; Monteverde = calm/nature.
  • Weather: La Fortuna = warm; Monteverde = cool and often foggy.
  • Adventure: both great — rafting/hot springs here, canopy/zip-lines there.
  • Nightlife: La Fortuna wins easily.

Why not both?

Here's the thing most people don't realize: they're only about three hours apart, and the journey between them is a highlight in itself. The classic jeep-boat-jeep takes a van to Lake Arenal, a boat straight across with the volcano behind you, and a van up the other side — way better than the long road around. Book the La Fortuna → Monteverde jeep-boat-jeep (from $33).

A common, well-paced route: 2–3 nights in La Fortuna for the volcano, waterfall, and hot springs, then over to Monteverde for the cloud forest and canopy.

Our take

If you can only pick one and you want warmth, adventure, and a social scene → La Fortuna. If you crave cool misty forest and wildlife → Monteverde. If you have 4+ days → do both, and start here: book your La Fortuna bed (dorms from $11), then hop the boat to Monteverde. See how many days you need to plan it out.
