The Cheapest Way to See Arenal Volcano

By Blackout CrewJun 2, 20266 min read

Arenal looks like a child's drawing of a volcano — a perfect cone over the rainforest — and you can experience it without blowing your budget. Here's the cheap-but-not-miserable way to do it.

See the volcano for free

The cone is visible from all over town and the surrounding roads. Walk to the edge of La Fortuna at sunset, or head toward Lake Arenal for the postcard view, and you've seen Arenal for $0. Clear mornings are your best bet before the clouds gather.

The best-value hike

To get up close, the Arenal Volcano Hike (from $65) walks the 1968 lava-flow trail right at the base — far better value than the pricier combo tours if the volcano itself is what you came for. Go early for the clearest views.

Cheap hot springs

Skip the $100 resorts. Soak for free in the natural hot river locals use (ask our front desk for current access), or book the evening hot springs (from $20) for proper pools at a backpacker price. More options in our guide to La Fortuna's hot springs.

Cheap activities nearby

Adventure doesn't have to be expensive. Stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Arenal (from $20) gets you on the water with the volcano behind you, and the river and town walks cost nothing.

Sleep cheap

This is where you save the most. Dorm beds at Blackout start at $11 a night, and a communal kitchen means you can cook instead of eating out — see our rooms. Cooking a couple of meals a day is the single biggest money-saver in La Fortuna.

Get here cheap

The public bus from San José is the cheapest way in if you have the time; a shared shuttle (from $65) is faster and door-to-door. See how to get to La Fortuna for the full comparison.

Put it together

Free volcano views, a $65 hike, a $20 soak, $11 beds, and a kitchen — you can have a brilliant few days at Arenal for a fraction of what the resorts charge. Grab a bed and start planning.
